Giving Back

Kitsap Family YMCA volunteers are people who share their time, talents and expertise to enhance the quality and strength of our programs and services.

ATTENTION!     Volunteers needed:

The YMCA Selective Swim Program for special needs children is in need of volunteers, especially in-pool swim training and male volunteers to assist the male children through the locker room dressing and undressing; and showers before and after the pool. It is expected that more than 100 children will be in the program beginning in October and more volunteers are needed!

This program is 48 years old at the Y and has helped thousands of special needs children over the years. They get much needed swim lessons and recreational swimming, but also get to participate in the Special Olympics during the summer.

Training is necessary to prepare for the duties and qualified volunteers may also help with the swim training. This Program is supported by United Way and other grant funding sources. Selective Swim hours are Friday mornings from 9 am to 12 noon, at the City of Bremerton Jarstad Aquatic Center. Contact Chriss K. at 473-5376 to apply.

Strong Kids Campaign
Our Strong Kids Campaign goal is $85,000 for 2008.  At the YMCA, one of our most important goals is to enrich the lives of kids in our community.  So that no one is denied a chance to participate, we need your help.

The annual Strong Kids Campaign raises much needed money to support such worthwhile programs as the Handicapped Learn-To-Swim Program, Teen Late Night, Before/After School Child Care and scholarships for low-income families.  Membership and program fees do not cover all of the costs to support these vital community programs.  Your contributions help make it happen.  This campaign is your campaign.

Your generosity will help benefit the lives of children in your community.    For details, contact Glen Godfrey, YMCA Executive Director.

Handicapped Youth Learn-to-Swim       GOAL:  $9,000

For 48 years, the YMCA’s Handicapped Youth Learn-to-Swim program has served children cost free with a volunteer staff.  For many youngsters this is their only freedom of movement and it provides self-confidence which helps them succeed in life.  Participants often go on to Special Olympics, which would have been impossible without the dedication of YMCA volunteer instructors.

Includes Family Service Department classes from Parent-child, tumbling, music, reading, art, ballet, sign language, martial arts and much more.  Special assistance to enlisted military families and popular military family DATE NIGHT.

Memorial Scholarships     GOAL:   $4,000

Given annually in honor and memory of A.H. (Ike) Parker, Dr. John P. Schutt, Jack Buesch, Art & Bee Anderson, Brad Knight, Mary Norwood and Keith Carden.  Designated to provide scholarships for those who may be just above financial guidelines, but unable to participate with assistance.

 Youth Programs      GOAL:    $9,000

Includes Youth Sports (Basketball, Indoor Soccer & Baseball), Swimming Lessons, Splash & Jam and the in building Youth Activity Room.  Thanks to your support over 2,800 youth took part during 2006.

 Teen Programs     GOAL:     $20,000

Number-wise the largest YMCA program serving 3,800 teens annually.  Includes Teen Late Night, Fairview Jr. Hi. Teen Nights, Teen weights, Special Events and Youth & Government.  In just Late Night 1,600 different teens participated in 2006.  We believe there are few comparable programs which reach the number of teens we do to prevent teen substance abuse and violence.  YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are displayed, discussed and taught.  Trash talk, filthy language and disrespect are not tolerated.  Teens know this up front and learn to modify their behavior toward positive character traits.  It’s all not an easy task, however over time we see a positive change in many, many young people.

Child Care/Camps     GOAL:    $23,000

YMCA child care includes before/after school “latchkey” with six school sites serving up to 21 different schools, in-building child watch, and two day camps reaching 3000 kids annually.  For many children the alternative to YMCA childcare is an empty house.  Studies show that children left to care for themselves after school, whether rich or poor, from single or two parent homes, are twice as likely to use tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol.  This is true regardless of a child’s sex, race, family income or academic performance.  YMCA Latchkey programs do indeed “Make a Difference”!

 YMCA Membership Assistance    GOAL:     $20,000

Low-income families, adults, youth and group homes are provided support enabling them to become YMCA members.  Scholarships are provided on a sliding scale based on income and number in the family.  The YMCA is the one place where everyone is welcome – the results are changed lives and a stronger community.

Heritage Club- “Supporting Our Youth into the Future”
Our YMCA served over 3,000 teens and allocated $168,000 in scholarships last year.  We have been teaching handicapped youth how to swim for over forty years.

Include the Kitsap Family YMCA in your will or estate plan and join us as a proud Heritage Club Member.  The YMCA welcomes all types of planned gifts, including gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts.  Significant, long-term Heritage Club donors become eligible for inclusion in the Kitsap YMCA "Heritage Hall of Honor".

END OF THE YEAR GIVING:
Charitable Strategies Benefit You...

2007 is coming to a close, so starting your "end-of the-year" planning early makes sense - it can't always be done in a few days or the last month of the year. Remember that making charitable gifts provides much-needed support for the YMCA's mission- not to mention you will get a good dose of heart warming!

Timing is everything...
By timing your charitable gifts before December 31st, you will see a tax break if you itemize deductions on your income tax return. There are several strategies for resourceful year-end giving.

  • Write a check.
  • Charge your credit card.
  • Contribute appreciated securities that you have held for more than one year.
  • Prepay a pledge.
  • Invest in a life income plan.
  • Donate an insurance policy.
  • New tax law incentives encourage you to use your IRA as never before!
On Aug. 17, 2006, President Bush signed into law new tax incentives for charitable gifts from donors who are 70½ or older. Under the law, you can make a lifetime gift using funds from your individual retirement account (IRA) without undesirable tax effects. Plus, you can make the gift now-while you are living and able to see the impact of your generosity through the YMCA.

As always, seek counsel on how your gift can best to suit your individual needs.

Handicapped Youth Learn-to-Swim
Volunteers are needed to work with school age children every Friday morning during the school  year. You do not have to be a swimmer to participate.  For many children, the program is their only freedom of movement that promotes self-confidence which helps kids succeed at not only swimming, but life. At the end of each school year our YMCA volunteers conclude the program by taking swimmers to Special Olympics.

Teen Late Night
The program takes place every Friday from 8:30- 11:00 p.m. for youth, ages 13-19 and offers basketball, walleyball, game room activities, swimming, hot tub and food. Volunteers serve as mentors by interacting one-on-one with youth in on-going activities.

Splash and Jam
It’s a great time for everyone!  The program takes place every third Saturday from 6:00- 9:00 p.m. and the program offers swimming, fun relay races, gym games, food, G-rated movie and a craft. Adult volunteers are needed to help plan activities, interact with participants and to serve as quality role models.

Activity Room
Our YMCA offers an activity room for ages 6 to adult. Volunteers are needed to help youth with homework and the organization of games, arts and crafts, and sports activities.

Youth Sports
Volunteer coaches are needed for YMCA sports, primarily basketball and baseball and tee-ball.  Volunteers are trained to emphasize skill development, teamwork and fun, not just winning.

Child Care
Volunteers work with youth in various activities such as sports, arts and crafts, free play, homework assistance, office support, specialty classes and more. Opportunities are available at numerous school sites throughout Kitsap County.
